Spit Happens! | This WONDERfilled Life

Some of you may remember waaaaayyyy back to the #52wonderfilledweeks challenge of 2018...this little project from Week 31 got a lot of attention in the horn world. Lot's of people talked about how I could make and sell these and while I totally agreed I had zero interest in doing that! My how things have changed.  I've used my spit pad everyday since making it.  I've had students use it. I wash it frequently and have used the mini one on several occasions where emptying on the floor didn't seem appropriate or safe at the random "one off gig". It's proved it's durability and usefulness to me over and over for the last two years!

Now with COVID so prevalent most organization that have called to have me play have indicated that some sort of "puppy pad" or towel will need to be used on stage and disposed of or laundered at the end of every rehearsal and concert.  I brought my cute teal and birdie backed spit pad to a recording I did a few weeks ago.  While the bright teal blue sort of stuck out to me it wasn't nearly as unsightly as the sea of disposable puppy pads under every wind and brass player and I decided then and there that it was time to produce some "classy" spit pads...how do you make spit pads classy you ask? You make them in concert black...duh....seems so obvious but it's amazing how much better it looks in black!

Now I know what you're thinking? Why wouldn't you just use a black towel? You totally could...BUT...these spit pads are backed with Polyurethane Laminate,  also known as PUL. What is PUL?

Here's what Nature's Fabric says about it's PUL (which is where I order my PUL from):

This PUL(polyurethane laminate) is free from metals, phthalates and latex. It is produced in accordance with new PUL application standards. There are no VOC's (volatile organic compounds)emitted during production. Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) free. Phthalate free and lead free. Latex and BPA free.PVCs, diisocynates, chlorine, or migratable plasticizers free.

Backing a liquid absorbing, 100% cotton terry cloth towel, with a waterproof PUL barrier gives everyone piece of mind.  You can empty to your hearts content without fear of leaking thru the towel to the floor and you can pick up the pad and roll it back up at the end of rehearsal for safe transport back home to launder and sanitize.

The pads are 14" x 24" and hold more liquid than you could ever possible dump on it (I poured 100ml in the above video!). When you're done with rehearsal fold the pad in thirds, and roll back up to keep the wet side of the towel inside the waterproof roll. The pad can be laundered with like colors on cool and tumble dried on low. The concert black pad looks better than a puppy pad laying on the stage and since it's reusable it will save you money in the long run not to mention saving the landfill from your puppy pad trash.

I have a small number of these ready for pick ASAP.  If there is enough demand I will run another batch.  Please contact me at wonderjodesigns@gmail.com to purchase, $15/pad (+ shipping and handling if needed).
